A couple of weeks back the wine world woke up to some truly shocking news, famed wine critic and the man most responsible for the one hundred point scale which now grades every wine crafted across the world, Robert Parker had largely retired. Parker announced that he would still be involved with scoring Bordeaux vintages but would be turning over control of California wine ratings to someone else on the Wine Advocate tasting panel. For companies reliant on these scores, it is a scary time but also offers a chance for consumers to find great wine gifts as some individual collectors and wineries look to take advantage of the last few years of Parker scores. The future for California wine isn’t all bad when it comes to Parker though, he is going to stick around his Wine Advocate magazine enough to rate past California vintages to see how well they age.
